It's impossible to know how much your home will be worth in 5 years' time, or even by next year. House prices generally go up each year, but over 2024 they are expected to stay pretty static as the market adjusts to higher mortgage rates. Using our free homebuyer reports, you can see what your home is currently worth, as well as what other properties nearby have sold for.

Providing that you meet eligibility criteria, you could remortgage to cover the cover the cost of home improvements. You would then pay this money back as part of your mortgage, as well as interest.

As a general rule, you can start the process of remortgaging up to 6 months before your existing mortgage deal comes to an end. If you don't find a better deal by the end of your current product term, you may be put onto your lender's standard variable rate (SVR), which can make your monthly repayments considerably higher.

How long it takes to remortgage depends how quickly you can receive a new mortgage offer from a lender and if there are any delays in the process.
